In 1995 the late Simon Henderson and I formed a nonprofit group called Bamboo People. In March 2013 this article by Simon about a project we started together appeared in my email. Reading it brought back forgotten knowledge. Our experiment with a research bamboo farm failed for several reasons. One of the reasons is that voles ate the rhizomes of our bamboo. Although the bamboo got taller, it never spread. If you are planting bamboo into a pasture (In Western Washington anyway), figure out how to kill the voles before you plant the bamboo.
